Obituary

Alan Wayne Lake, 75, of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, passed away on Sunday April 6th, 2025 after a long illness.

Born in Acushnet, MA on November 24th, 1949, Alan graduated from New Bedford High School in 1967.  He attended Berklee School of Music in Boston for one year before enlisting in the US Navy.  He proudly served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp CVS-18 as an Airman responsible for aircraft maintenance on-board the ship, until the vessel's decommissioning in 1972.  He was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserve in 1974.

After his military service, he completed his studies at Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma and then moved back to Massachusetts.  Alan worked for most of his adult life on Cape Cod – first at Cape Cod PowerSports (formerly Kawasaki, Yamaha & Marine) in Hyannis as General Manager and subsequently at Oyster Harbors Marine in Osterville as Parts & Purchasing Manager.  His mechanical prowess made him highly skilled at fixing motorcycles, personal watercraft, and boats.  After retiring, he served on the advisory board and as a volunteer instructor in the Marine Technology Department at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School in Bourne, mentoring young men and women pursuing this field.

Alan loved boats – he relished his time saltwater fishing with close friends as well as monitoring the marine traffic in the Cape Cod Canal near his home.  He enjoyed sports and was a regular attendee of Bourne High School athletic events – particularly volleyball and basketball – long after his son's graduation from the school.

He was exceptionally warm and affable and made many friends and acquaintances wherever he went.  From the staff at The Breakfast Nook in East Wareham and a lifetime of work colleagues and customers to his extended family and long-time neighbors in Buzzards Bay, he was known as a friendly and generous person.

Alan is survived by his loving family – his wife of 49 years, Elaine (Harrison) of Buzzards Bay, his son Michael Wesley Lake of Weymouth – along with many cousins, friends, and acquaintances.  His father Wesley Ellsworth Lake of New Bedford has since passed away.  He was predeceased by his mother Beverley (Parkin) Lake.

Friends and relatives are invited to a joint memorial celebration – for Alan and his father Wesley – on Saturday November 22nd, 2025 at 11AM at Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street in New Bedford.  The family will begin receiving guests at 10:30AM, prior to the service. A private burial service was held at Oakland Grove Cemetery in Bourne, MA, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be mailed to the General Scholarship Fund at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School, 220 Sandwich Road, Bourne, MA 02532, with checks designated "In memory of Alan Lake" in the memo line.
