IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Albert O.
Houtman, Jr.
August 27, 1930 – December 13, 2024
Albert Osborne Houtman, Jr. passed on from this life on December 13, 2024, at the age of 94 . He was the son of the late Albert O. Houtman, Sr. and the late Inez (Alves) Houtman-Spencer.
Albert now joins the love of his life, Mary "Lourdy" Houtman, who has been awaiting Albert's arrival since April of 2024. They were married on Christmas Eve 73 years ago and now can continue celebrating their union together.
Albert or Beepa, (as the grandchildren named him), was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a true family man, a parishioner of Our Lady of Assumption Church, a member of the NAACP (New Bedford Chapter) and the lone surviving member of the Gaylord Club.
Known for walking early everyday and greeting people along the way, this developed into walking his grandchildren to elementary school early so they could play before school. Soon he was walking a number of neighborhood kids to school for many years. He so cared for our future generations.
Albert was an artist and dancer, winning nearly every dance contest he entered. He was a quick-witted person who was the life of every room he entered. A real movie buff, his knowledge of movies, actors and their lives was accurate beyond belief.
Albert worked as a longshoreman for over 45 years until his retirement. He was a member of the International Longshoremen's Association - Local 1413-1465 having held numerous Executive Board positions. During his time as a union member, Albert helped formulate and implement his union's pension plan.
Albert is survived by his sister, Patricia Houtman-Jackson of Bowie, MD; his children, Camille Houtman-Raymond (Ronald), Raymond Houtman, and David Houtman (Cathy), all of New Bedford; his grandchildren, Marques Houtman, Isaiah Houtman (Tina) of New Bedford, Preston Raymond of Boston, David Raymond (Katie), Stephanie Canery (Marcel), Cedric Houtman (Giselle) of New Bedford and Benjamin Battles of Omaha, NE; his great-grandchildren, Julian Raymond, Christopher and Abigail Houtman, Mia, Kendrick and Cade Canery, August Houtman and Chandler Raymond; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Albert was predeceased by his loving wife Mary; his daughter, Lourdes Houtman-Battles; his brother, Floyd Houtman; his sister, Olive Houtman-Smith; and his daughter-in-law, Yvonne Silva-Houtman.
