Alfred F. Alves, 87, of New Bedford passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday June 10, 2026. He was the husband of Fernanda (Garcia Sousa) Alves. 

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joao F. and Adelaide (Silva) Alves, he lived in New Bedford all of his life. 

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. 

Alfred was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Southeastern Massachusetts University where he received his Bachelor's degree in accounting. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany from 1962-1965. 

Alfred began his working career in the business office of Cameo Curtains and later became an assistant manager for Friendly’s Ice Cream. He then transitioned into a long and satisfying career with the New Bedford Public School Department. Starting as a Social Studies and Portuguese language teacher at Roosevelt Junior High School, he later moved to New Bedford High School where he taught Portuguese. He also had been a Portuguese language teacher in the Adult Education program at New Bedford High School, assisting many individuals in learning the Portuguese language.

While at Roosevelt Junior High School, Alfred was very proud in leading his students in a performance for students, faculty, and parents, O Dia de Portugal (Day of Portugal) an annual event celebrated throughout Portuguese communities on June 10. One of his proudest accomplishments was his ability to mentor to countless young adults. He enjoyed traveling, exploring new destinations and meeting new and diverse groups of people. His favorite travel location was Hawaii, where he traveled many times with his wife. 

He is survived by his wife, Fernanda, and his daughter, Robin M. Alves who provided exceptional loving care comforting her father in managing his daily care and health needs in his later years. Alfred is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew J. Chace and Kaylee E. Chace, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Amy Grace Chace; and his siblings, John F. Alves, Martinho Alves, and Mary Cabral.

His funeral will be held on Tuesday June 23rd at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10 AM. Burial with military honors will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday June 22nd from 4-7 PM.
