Amelia (Pereira Cardoso) Amaral of New Bedford passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025 at the age of 95. Born in Vila Ruiva, Fornos de Algodres, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria Emilia Pereira Cardoso and the loving wife of the late Joseph "Breezy" Amaral.
Affectionately known as Alice, she emigrated to the United States as a young woman to pursue her dreams creating a family and career. Alice loved her jobs, eventually retiring from her favorite role at Our Lady's Haven. Alice generously shared her many talents and interests. She was a skilled seamstress who created her children's clothes. Her gardens blossomed with colorful flowers and summer vegetables. Dedicated to her family, she was a loyal mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and cousin who loved to cook their favorite dishes and celebrate holidays together. A devoted Catholic with deep faith, she was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish.
She is survived by her loving children: her son, John Amaral, her daughters, Kathleen Lopes and her husband Daniel and Cheryl Jochim and her husband Patrick, and her stepsons, Wayne Amaral and Richard Amaral and his wife, Robyn, six grandchildren, Melissa Scanlon, Jonathan Lopes, Christopher Amaral, Amanda Jochim, Patrick Jochim, Morgan Amaral, and four great-grandchildren, Grace, Anthony, Cole, and Renee.
She was the sister of the late Julio, Maria Anjos and Fernando Cardoso.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 8th at 10 am at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 343 Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford. Visiting hours will be on Monday, April 7th, from 4-7 pm at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
