Obituary

Americo A. Penha, 84, of North Dartmouth died Sunday September 1, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Olive R. (Robin) Penha, and son of the late Francisco A. and Rosa (Dantas) Penha.

Born in New Bedford, he was educated at Roosevelt Junior High School. In 1932, he moved with his family to Viano Castelo, Portugal. He later returned to New Bedford in 1940 and had lived in North Dartmouth since 1964.

Mr. Penha was apprenticed to a barber in Viano Castelo at the age of 14 years. When he returned to New Bedford, he was employed as a barber at Baldo Brothers Barber Shop on Water Street. He purchased the business in 1947 and renamed it the Orpheum Barber Shop. He later moved the shop to 145 Cove Street, and after the fire in the Fontaine Block he relocated to 159 Cove Street, where he worked until his retirement in 1999.

He was a communicant of St. George Church in Westport.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Robin Servais and her husband Jean of North Dartmouth; and 2 brothers, Francisco A. Penha of New Bedford and Armand Penha of Florida.
