Ana Cristina Contreras

Ana Cristina Contreras, 61, of New Bedford died Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at Brigham and Women's Hospital after a long illness surrounded by her family.

Born in Bilbao, Viscaya, Spain, daughter of Ramona Bretal Contreras and the late Angel M. Contreras. In 1979, at the age of 15, she immigrated with her family to New Bedford, where she built a life rooted in service, resilience, and deep love for her family.

Ana was predeceased by her beloved brother and best friend Angel G. Contreras. They were bound by a profound love and deep loyalty.

Ana is survived by her mother, Ramona; Kevin Rebeiro; her daughters, Yanire Mendes and her husband, Andre Mendes, of Swansea, Cristina Rebeiro and Aaron Watkins of Fall River, and Taylee Rebeiro and Victor Mota of New Bedford. She was the proud and devoted grandmother of Camryn Mendes, Aaron Watkins, Zara Mendes, and Zane Mendes, who were the greatest joys of her life. She is also survived by her nieces, Angelee Contreras and Brandi Roderick; her nephew, Brandon Cabral; her cherished great nieces, Abrielle and Valentina Monteiro; many beloved cousins whom she considered like siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family members, bonus kids, and dear friends, all of whom she loved dearly.

Ana was a lifelong learner whose passion for education never waned. She earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, followed by her Master of Social Work from Boston University. Even after years of serving others, she continued pursuing excellence, proudly earning her Licensed Clinical Social Worker credential in 2025.

Her calling to care for others was reflected throughout her professional life. She served families through the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families before continuing her career with the Massachusetts Trial Court, where she worked at both the Fall River District Court and the New Bedford District Court. She approached every role with compassion, wisdom, and an unbiased approach to helping her community and those in need.

Ana embraced life wholeheartedly. She loved traveling, and treasured every opportunity to return home to the life she left behind in Spain. She found joy in sharing long lunches and dinners with her girlfriends, creating memories through conversation and laughter. She had a lifelong love of the water, whether swimming in a pool, spending time at the beach, or simply smelling the ocean air. She delighted in word games, always enjoying a challenge that kept her quick mind engaged.

Above all, Ana's greatest joys were her girls, and family. The love she shared for her grandchildren had no limit. She enjoyed quick trips to Great Wolf with her and her brother's grandbabies where they enjoyed endless laughs. She treasured every milestone, every embrace, every holiday gathered around the table, and every ordinary moment that became extraordinary simply because they were together. Her home was a place of warmth, generosity, and unconditional love, where family always came first.

Ana will be remembered for her sharp wit, infectious sense of humor, remarkable strength, and the ability to make others feel seen, heard, and deeply loved. She was a trusted confidante, a fierce advocate, and a compassionate soul whose legacy is one of kindness, courage, grace, and unwavering devotion. Though her presence will be profoundly missed, the love she poured into the lives of others will continue to echo through generations. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, August 3, 2026 at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church at 10 AM.
