Anita Lopes (Andrade) Turner, 88, of New Bedford passed away peacefully at home in the presence of her loving family at her side on Wednesday January 15, 2025.
She was born in New Bedford to the late Joseph Rosario Andrade and Ana "Picha" (Oliveira) Andrade on March 31, 1936. Anita lived in her beloved West End community her entire life. Her dedication to her community manifested itself as a founder and organizer of Save the Children, an annual event held in a neighborhood park for the children to have a fun-filled day as well as neighbors. She was a member of the West End Reunion Committee that reunited people of their beloved community. Her other club affiliations included the Cape Verdean Women's Social Club, the St. Martin de Porres Guild of Our Lady of the Assumption Church and the St. Luke's Retirees Club. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and St. Luke's School of Nursing. Following graduation, she devoted forty years of service to St. Luke's Hospital as a Registered Nurse.
Anita was preceded by her husband, Norman L. Turner, her sisters, Mary Bargasse, Ann Stevens Pinto, and Alice Conceicao, and her brothers, Armando "Mandy" Andrade, Allen Andrade and Joseph "Joey" Andrade, Jr. She is survived by her children, Sandra Turner-Glover and her husband James, Gregory Turner, Susan Turner-Hickey and her partner Steven Garron, and Sheryl (Turner) Gomes; nine grandchildren, Craig, Joshua, Dylan, Nathan, Justin, Jenna, Raymond, Isaiah, and Jameson; five great-grandchildren, Arianna, Ryleigh, Lehlani, Isaiah Jr., and Zoey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, and "bonus" neighborhood children (you know who you are).
The family wishes to acknowledge each of you with appreciation for your prayers, thoughts and acts of kindness. Special acknowledgements are extended to Howard White, Pam Sanders, Dorothy James, Stephanie Quintino and Ana Martins Freire who provided care to our beloved mother.
Her funeral will be held on Friday January 24th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 10 AM.
