Annie C. (Gabriel) Peter, 97, of New Bedford passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2026 surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late John Maroon Peter.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Gabriel Joseph Gabriel and Habka (Michael) Gabriel, she lived in New Jersey and New Bedford for most of her life.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Purgatory Church, where she was a member of the Saint Joseph's Sodality and served on various fundraising committees over the years. She also enjoyed working the parish’s annual Christmas Bazaar at the raffle table.
Annie was a graduate of Passaic High School in Passaic, New Jersey.
She was formerly employed as a secretary for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and later as a clerk for the City of New Bedford Water Department for many years, until her retirement.
Annie loved attending the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament (especially the parade), and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Annie is survived by her daughter, Christine Peter, and son-in-law, Jeffrey Rego; three grandsons, Alexander, Jacob, and Matthew Rego; and her great-granddaughter, Hazel Rego.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Gabriel and Amelia Gabriel.
Annie took delight in her family and often reflected on her blessed life. She said she always remained a “Jersey Girl” and original “bobby soxer.” Annie recalled her years attending Broadway plays and musicals. In her later years, she enjoyed resting under her grapevine and cooking for her family.
Her Funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 8:45 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Purgatory Church, 4254 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, August 4th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Donations in Annie's memory may be made to Our Lady of Purgatory Church, New Bedford.
