Obituary

Anthony J. Ferreira, 92, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 4, 2025.  He was the devoted husband of Janice (Plocica) Ferreira, with whom he would have celebrated 69 years of marriage on May 26th.

Born and raised in New Bedford, Anthony graduated from New Bedford High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts Technological Institute (formerly NBIT) and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from the University of Colorado.

A proud Naval officer, LT, Anthony dedicated his career to serving his country. He was employed by the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island, as a project engineer and division head for major weapons systems programs. After retiring from NUSC, he continued his work as a special project/chief engineer at McLaughlin Research Corporation.

His professional achievements were numerous, including serving as the U.S. Representative to the NATO Armaments Committee in Paris, France. He was honored with the American Society of Naval Engineers' Claude A. Jones Award, the U.S. Naval Meritorious Civilian Service Award, and the Excellence in Management Award.

Beyond his career, Anthony was deeply involved in civic and community service. He served as Trustee for the New Bedford Free Public Library, chaired the Building Committee for its historical restoration, and was recognized as Massachusetts Library Trustee of the Year. His contributions extended to Coastline Elderly, where he developed quality assurance programs for small businesses and elderly care initiatives. He was awarded the Marian Medal by the Diocese of Fall River for his service.

At his core, Anthony was a consummate family man who cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren. He pursued many hobbies, finding joy in music, woodworking, ping pong, and golf-where he faithfully observed the rules of the game. Later in life, he discovered a passion for the ukulele and formed lasting friendships through various ukulele groups.

Anthony is survived by his beloved wife, Janice Ferreira, and his four children: Elizabeth Forgue and her husband Kevin; Mark Ferreira and his wife Karen; Anne Lawrence, predeceased by her husband Jeffery; and Christine Pedersen and her husband Timothy. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Joshua, Caleigh, Samuel, Zachary, Benjamin, Caleb, Lauren, Morgan, and Jacob; as well as eight great-grandchildren.

His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 13th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be on Monday, May 12th from 5-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be sent to the St. Lawrence Martyr Church Food Pantry, 110 Summer Street, New Bedford, MA 02740.
