Arthur J. Lomba of New Bedford died peacefully on January 16, 2026 at his longtime, family home surrounded by loved ones. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Carol A. (Santos) Lomba in 2009. Arthur was born in Brava, Cape Verde. He was the son of the late John and Diah (Silva) DaLomba.
He came to the United States in 1954, and graduated from New Bedford High School in 1959. Arthur was a dedicated educator for over 40 years. He started his career as a teacher of the French language at his alma mater New Bedford High School. He also taught at the Western High School in Washington, D.C. while pursuing graduate studies at the American University. Later, he became a member of the faculty at Eastern Nazarene College, also his alma mater, where he served for 30 years. During his tenure at ENC, he directed the Foreign Language Department and the Multicultural Affairs Committee. He enjoyed taking students on study tours to France and Caribbean Islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique and kept in contact with several of his students over the years.
Within his community, Arthur was a member of the International Church of the Nazarene and was very involved in the early days of the church, having served as a Sunday school teacher and President of the Young People's Group. Arthur also found great reward in helping adult Cape Verdean immigrants learn English and prepare for the citizenship exam.
In his free time he enjoyed taking cruises with his wife Carol. They went on 11 trips, sometimes with cousins and friends. He liked reading and studying books on theology and watching religious programs on television. He would wrap up most of his days watching a game show with his daughter Michelle, a check in on his daughter Noelle's day, and a nightly phone call with his dear sister Lucy.
His greatest joy, however, was spending time with his grandchildren. Arthur loved his role as Papa, whether it was sharing his love of the Boston Celtics, performing in a puppet show, or their annual visit to the zoo. Each birthday, he'd send a card with a photo inside signed, "Love, Nana and Papa" always reminding his grandchildren of his wife.
He is survived by his two daughters; Catherine Michelle McCarran of New Bedford and Noelle Querzoli and her husband David of Easton; sister Lucy Balla of Taunton; his brother Hal DaLomba of Illinois. Arthur is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Abigail, Nolan, Andrew, Evan, Adam and Molly. Arthur is also survived by several much loved nieces and nephews; dear cousins and friends.
The family wishes to thank Pastor Ramiro Montiero for sharing his faith and friendship with Arthur; as well as Arthur's physician Dr. Earl Potts for his comfort and friendship; the care team at Dana Farber Cancer Institute for years of life-sustaining treatment; and Community Nurse Hospice for their compassionate care.
His private Funeral Service was held, Thursday January 22nd in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.
