Obituary

Arthur "Buddy" Monteiro, Jr., a devoted husband, father, brother, born-again Christian, musician, and proud Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024. A lifelong resident of New Bedford, Buddy was known for his humor, deep faith, and dedication to his family and community.

Born to the late Arthur Monteiro, Sr., and Evelyn G. (Britto) Gomes, Buddy lived a life centered on service, family, and his passions. A proud veteran, he served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. He worked for many years driving for the New Bedford Public Schools' food service program, where he took pride in supporting the local community.

As a talented musician, Buddy's proudest moment was recording the album The Hitchhikers for ABC Records. Over the years, he was a member of multiple musical groups, sharing his passion for music and leaving a lasting impact on those who performed with him and those who enjoyed his talent.

Buddy is survived by his loving wife, Elaine J. (Mendes) Monteiro; his son, Anthony Monteiro, and his wife, Dorenda; his stepsons, Derek Stevens and his wife, Sheila, and Christian Stevens and his wife, Dayra; his sister, June Monteiro Watson, and her partner, Lorenzo Everette; his brother, Allan J. Monteiro, and his wife, Carol; and his stepbrothers, Paul Turner and his wife, Catherine, and Steve Turner and his partner, Karen Chreffler. He was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Robin Monteiro, and his sister, Janice G. Monteiro.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, with a memorial service beginning at 6 PM. A private military burial service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Association in honor of Buddy and Elaine's connection to New Bedford's rich maritime heritage.
