Avis A. (Williams) Lopes, 94, of New Bedford died Thursday October 30, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Charles and Edith (Brown) Williams, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.

She was a member of Union Baptist Church, where she served as an usher.

Survivors include three children, Avis M. Britto and her husband Peter, Cecil M. Lopes and his fiancée Regina Jackson, and Allen Lopes and his wife Karen, all of New Bedford; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Matthew E. Lopes, great-grandmother of the late Cecil M. Lopes III, and sister of the late Edna Williams, Milton Williams, and Edith Watkins.

Her Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 9 AM at the Union Baptist Church, 109 Court St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery.
