Billie-Marie F. (Houtman) Gomes, 84, of New Bedford, passed away on October 30, 2024 after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Paul A. Gomes, Sr., her high school sweetheart, to whom she was married for 55 years.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Williston and Frances (Hazell) Houtman, Billie lived in New Bedford her entire life. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Kinyon-Campbell Business School. After working for several years as a Data Processor for Rodney Metals, Billie dedicated her life to providing a loving home for her beloved husband and three sons.
Billie was a die-hard fan of the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and Boston Red Sox. She enjoyed crocheting, dancing, reading, assembling jigsaw puzzles, shopping, traveling to the casino, and spending time with her family. Billie was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Survivors include her sons: Paul A. Gomes, Jr. of New Bedford; David A. Gomes of Dartmouth, and Jonathan A. Gomes and his wife Emily of Acushnet; her siblings: Kenneth Houtman and his wife Linda and Dennis Houtman, all of New Bedford; Richard Frates and his wife Robin of Texas; and Lucy Woods of Indiana; five grandsons: Craig, Raymond, Isaiah, Ethan, and Luke, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends, whom she loved dearly.
She was the sister of the late Wallace Houtman, Rosalie Allen, Lola Pennebaker, Russell Houtman, and Claire Arruda.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the teams at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River and Vibra Hospital of Southeastern Massachusetts in New Bedford for the excellent level of care rendered to Billie-Marie.
Her funeral will be held Friday, November 8, 2024 at 9:00 A.M. from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, 1213 Kempton St. New Bedford. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Flowers are welcome and donations can be made in her honor at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 47 S. Sixth Street, New Bedford, MA 02740.
