In Loving Memory of Brenda Correia
Brenda A. Correia, 68, of New Bedford died August 9, 2026. She was the epitome of unconditional love: she leaves behind a profound legacy in the form of the countless lives that she touched and changed for the better. During Brenda's life, she held many treasured titles: daughter, sister, godchild, wife, mother, niece, godmother, grandmother, life-partner, social worker, advocate, colleague, mentor, and friend. She tirelessly gave each and every one of these roles her all.
A kind-hearted and selfless soul, Brenda's life was defined by her innate drive to uplift everyone she met. A woman who always placed the well-being of others above her own, Brenda dedicated her life to ensuring that the most vulnerable had a champion and supporter.
Her remarkable strength and determination were most evident in her journey through higher education. Balancing the immense responsibilities of being a mother and sole provider for her family, Brenda persevered for many years to earn her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and, later, her Master of Social Work (MSW) from the prestigious Simmons University, School of Social Work in Boston. As a licensed clinical social worker, Brenda opted not to go into private practice, choosing instead to embark on a lifelong career in social work and counseling within the public sector, becoming a devoted source of support for countless families and children in need.
For more than two decades, she was a dedicated presence in the New Bedford Public School system. She served, with distinction, as a School Adjustment Counselor at Trinity Day Academy. Whether offering short-term family counseling, crisis intervention, or simply ensuring a student's MCAS testing dates were perfectly aligned, Brenda approached every case with profound attention to detail, sensitivity and the goal of bringing out positive outcomes for all of her clients, especially the children.
Prior to her career at Trinity Day, Brenda worked as the School Adjustment Counselor at Sergeant William H. Carney Elementary School from 2003 to 2008, a role she loved. Admittedly a bit out of her comfort zone, Brenda briefly brought her clinical skills to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida, where she worked as a Psychosocial Case Manager. There, as part of the team, Brenda's formidable skills shined as she assessed patients' needs, coordinated discharge planning, and strategically bridged the gap between hospital professionals and community agencies to ensure that her patients received the holistic care they deserved.
Her career took a turn when she chose to care for her life partner, who battled a form of ALS, setting aside professional ambitions for more than a decade. Upon his passing, she took a position as a clinician at the Fall River Deaconess Home, where she continued to make a difference, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a lifelong dedication to helping children, families, and individuals navigate some of their most challenging moments. Her years of work in crisis intervention, mental health, counseling, and school-based services gave her a depth of knowledge that she generously shared with her colleagues. Often the first one to arrive at the office and the last one to leave, she considered her work not simply a job but a calling.
Through every stage of her life, Brenda humbly led with a purposeful heart that remained focused on always giving support, guidance, and love, no matter where it was needed. She chose to see the potential in everyone and to lead with humanity.
For those in need, she will be remembered as a fiercely caring human being who made their world a warmer, safer place. For the few who knew of her cancer diagnoses and struggles in the last year of her life, they will forever remember the courageous way she fought, challenging her doctors as well as the odds. To us all, Brenda was a quiet force to be reckoned with, and we admired and loved her for it. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Brenda is survived by her loving son, her devoted sister Shelly, daughter-in-law Helen, grandsons Miles and Calvin, nephew Jason and great nieces Jasia and Mia. She was predeceased by her beloved mother Julia and brother David earlier this year.
As per Brenda's wishes, her Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 10 am at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 47 South Sixth Street, New Bedford, MA. Burial services will immediately follow at the Rural cemetery, 149 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford, MA., in section 210, lot 394. For those who wish to make a gift in memory of Brenda, an opportunity for scholarship donations will be posted in the near future.
