Carlota Rosalind "Penny" Torres of Acushnet passed away on October 25, 2026, following a long illness. She will be remembered for her sharp wit, independent spirit, inquisitive mind, and the deep understanding and connection she shared with those closest to her.
Penny was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and grew up in Dartmouth, where she graduated from Dartmouth High School. She graduated from St. Anne's School of Nursing in 1961, beginning a lifelong career devoted to nursing and the care of others. She continued her education at Boston University, earning both her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing, and later graduated from the University of Rhode Island as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in psychiatric nursing.
Penny worked as a nursing instructor, sharing her knowledge and experience with the next generation of nurses. She eventually established her own psychiatric practice, providing medication management for many years. Deeply dedicated to her profession, she continued working until retiring in her seventies.
Outside of her professional life, Penny had a passion for travel and adventure. Alongside her longtime companion, Claire I. Magnant, she explored the world, including a memorable year-and-a-half journey through Europe in a camper in 1970. Their travels also took them to Hong Kong, China, Japan, Russia, Cuba, Egypt, Brazil, Eastern Europe, and the Azores, among many other destinations. They also enjoyed a canal boat trip through France. These adventures reflected Penny's curiosity about the world and her willingness to embrace new experiences.
Family and close relationships were important parts of Penny's life. She had a special gift for understanding people and making them feel heard. She seemed to instinctively understand where others were coming from, offering thoughtful, honest perspectives often delivered with her unmistakable sarcastic humor. Penny loved a good, deep conversation and was always ready to discuss life, politics, or just about anything else. Her sharp mind, candid nature, and distinctive sense of humor made time spent with her memorable.
Penny was predeceased by her parents, Hilda C. Torres and Manuel Pacheco Torres, and her brothers, Paul Richard Torres and Peter Randall Torres.
She leaves behind her longtime companion, Claire I. Magnant; her dear friend and sister-in-law, Ann-Christin Torres of Westport, Massachusetts; her nieces, Jessica (Torres) Spivey of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and Kimberly Torres of Westfield, New Jersey; her nephew, Nicolas Torres of Nantucket, Massachusetts; and her great-nieces and great-nephews, Annika Spivey, Amelia Spivey, Justin Torres, Tiberius Torres, Penelope Torres, and Kyle Moscone.
Penny leaves behind a legacy of compassion, curiosity, honesty, and laughter. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her and were fortunate enough to share in her conversations, adventures, and life.
