David Pires

David Pires, 83, of Dartmouth, formerly of New Bedford, passed away at home on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

Born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Jose L. and Justa G. (Fernandes) Pires, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Dartmouth several years ago.

David was formerly employed as a merchant seaman with the National Maritime Union until his retirement.

He enjoyed listening to music.

He is survived by his sisters, Maria Lessa, Alcinda Gonzales, Julia Benjamin, and Elizabeth Ferreira and her husband Antonio; his special cousin, Cindy Pires, who was like a sister to him; his brother-in-law, John Graca; and many nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Antonio G. Pires, Daniel F. Pires, Eugenia Graca, and Victoria Pires; and his brothers-in-law, Jose Lessa and Ayres Gonzales.

His family would like to thank NeuroRestorative Massachusetts for the compassionate care given to David while a resident at their home.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 24, 2026 at 11 AM at St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday morning, prior to the Mass, from 9-10:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
