IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward S.
Begley
July 17, 1930 – February 17, 2025
Edward S. Begley, 94, of New Bedford died February 17, 2025 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Eleanor S. (Campbell) Begley, with whom he shared 74 years of marriage. He was the son of the late William Begley and Leona (Staples) Begley Mandly. Ed was a direct descendant of Richard Warren, a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620. He was a lifelong resident of New Bedford.
Ed retired in 1992 after 20 years as a machine operator at the Acushnet Company, Rubber Division. He had previously worked as a milkman for Braley's Creamery and Gulf Hill Dairy, both in Dartmouth. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford, and had been a member of the Y.M.C.A. He served as a PTA President when his children were young and helped lead a Boy Scout troop. He also served in the Massachusetts National Guard.
Ed's greatest pleasure and joy was his family, he loved them dearly and was always there for them. He spent many happy hours playing games and cards with his children and then with his grandchildren. He and Eleanor were always there to watch the children participate in their various school, sports, dancing, scouting and other events. After he retired, they spent countless hours helping to care for their grandchildren and going to watch their sporting and other special events. Ed enjoyed swimming and, as a younger man, enjoyed fishing and boating in his spare time.
Survivors include his 5 children, Sharlene Begley and her partner Ronald Blocker of Carrollton, TX, Sharon Mingola of New Bedford, Susan St. Gelais and her husband Charles of Lakeville, Edward S. Begley, Jr. and his wife Iris of Dartmouth and Sandra Raposo and her husband John of New Bedford; 9 grandchildren, Kimberly Mello, Nathan St. Gelais and his wife Allison, Erin Mingola, Samuel St. Gelais and his wife Jennifer, Jocelyn Raposo and her partner Kevin Carreiro, Timothy Abisamra, James Abisamra and his wife Kathleen Campbell, Chantal Canha and her husband Josh, Jay Raposo; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Malcolm Campbell and his wife Louise of Gold River, CA.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Alex Mingola, and his brothers William Begley and John Begley.
A private graveside service will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, New Bedford.
