Obituary

Elisabeth M. Lockwood, a lifelong advocate for education and civic engagement, died on December 7, 2024, at the age of 89.

Born in New York City on July 23, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Harry F. Muller, Jr., and Leonore Muller, née Buehler, both of whom were employed in advertising vocations during which Mrs. Muller coined the famous jingle: "Ding Dong, Avon Calling!".

As a proud alumna of the Friends Seminary and Chapin Schools, her formative years were marked by her academic pursuits and cultivation of lifelong friendships. Educated at Barnard College in New York, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science complementing her minor in English Literature, which launched her early career in publishing sectors as an Editorial Assistant for the N.Y. Herald Tribune, followed by The New Yorker before moving to Connecticut.

A graduate from Western Connecticut State University, who held a Master's degree in Education with sixth-year graduate certification from Southern Connecticut State University, Liz taught first and second grade at Stillmeadow Elementary School in Stamford, Connecticut for over two decades. She established and contributed to innovative educational programs, assisting families and students as the Facilitator for the Elementary Gifted Program and as Co-Founder of the Rogers School Community Center Organization (ROSCCO).

A woman distinguished in both educational settings and in her community, her civic engagements included serving as Director of Volunteers for the Corporate Angel Network in White Plains New York, membership to a myriad of local Boards and Commissions, and countless volunteer hours and contributions to political campaigns.

In 2004, Liz moved to Cape Cod, where she remained deeply involved in community affairs. Her contributions as Volunteer Director at the Cape Cod Museum of History, Director of the Nauset Neighbors Harwich/Chatham Expansion and member of the Refugee Support Team of Nauset Interfaith Association underscored her enduring commitment to education and service.

A relentless advocate for underrepresented communities, Liz was a consummate world-traveler, an avid democrat and a proclaimed political junkie. Her lifelong dedication to spearheading positive social change was matched by her keen intellect, tireless wit, and treasured friendships - establishing her as a distinguished figure within every community she touched.

Liz is survived by her three daughters, Laura R. Lockwood, of CT, Heather M. Estudinan of CO, and, Erica L. Brann, of CO, her four grandchildren of CO, and predeceased by her former husband, Edward B. Lockwood, Jr.

A celebration of Liz's life will take place in early summer, with details forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her may do so through donations to The International Rescue Committee through the following link: https://www.rescue.org
