Elizabeth A. Cabral

Elizabeth Ada “Betty” (Lopes) Cabral, 85, of New Bedford passed away Monday April 6, 2026 at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility, having been a resident there for the past three years.

Betty was born on September 22, 1940 to parents Helen Ellis Lopes and Lawrence R. Lopes. She graduated from New Bedford Vocational High School and worked for Titleist Corporation for many years before her retirement. Her position at Titleist was payroll supervisor, a job that she loved and was proud to do because it involved dealing with people, something that she loved to do.

Betty received her Associates degree in Business Administration from Fisher Junior College, and continued to add to her education by attending evening classes whenever she needed.

If you were fortunate to meet Betty, you had a friend for life. She was kind and loving and found good in everyone. She was a good listener and loved having conversations over her favorite cup of tea. Her favorite time of the year was for the family gatherings at 81 Hillman Street. Family was important to her and she cherished those times and made them very special. Many long hours were spent in meal preparation and decorating the house before and friends arrived. The family did this together and it was this that kept them close and caring so much about each other. Birthdays were another event that she loved. She never missed a birthday whether it was for a one year old or a senior citizen. Betty was present at all times!

A love of animals, that amounted to four dogs and one cat, gave her so much happiness. At one time Betty had to administer injections to one dog that had the same disease that she contracted earlier in life and had to deal with for over fifty years.

Betty was an excellent seamstress and it was one thing that made her so special. She fashioned garments for friends and family to include wedding dresses, and anyone that had a pattern for a garment that had to be made. She did this with attention to detail and nothing left her sewing room unless it was absolutely perfect.

Having been a special person loved by all, Betty will have her seat at that special eternal table reserved for people just like her.

A heartfelt thanks to all the medical professionals and staff from Hathaway Manor and St. Luke’s Hospital for their excellent care and attention given to Betty in her times of need

She is survived by her husband, Valentino G. Cabral, passing one month short of 64 years of marriage. She also leaves her two remaining sisters, Lorraine Lopes and Lucille Nobre, as well as many nieces and nephews who she loved so dearly.

Betty was predeceased by her only child, Sharyn Elizabeth Cabral, and her sisters, Patricia Lomba and Naomi Gonsalves.

Her visitation will be held on Tuesday April 14th from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by a memorial service at 7 PM. A graveside memorial for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.
