Ellen W. Kelly

Ellen W. (Markey) Kelly, 84, of New Bedford passed away peacefully on Friday December 12, 2025 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of nearly 32 years, Edward M. Kelly, whom she missed dearly.

Born in New Bedford to Stephen and Elizabeth (Allen) Markey, Ellen was a proud graduate of Holy Family High School, Class of 1959. She held her school and classmates close to her heart and especially looked forward to monthly lunches with several of "the girls," a tradition she treasured for many years.

For 40 years, Ellen worked in the Financial Services/Billing Department at Pediatric Associates of New Bedford, where she remained employed part-time until her passing. She was also a devoted member of the Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Ladies Guild.

Ellen was a loving mother to her sons, James J. Kelly and his wife Marion, and Peter E. Kelly and his wife Jamie. She was a proud and loving Nana to Christopher, Matthew, Connor, Abbie, and William, who loved their Nana more than anything in the world. Ellen is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Shaughnessy and husband William and Mary Longo and husband Michael. She is also survived by her in-laws, Carol Markey, Freeman Winslow, and Julia Mitchell, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Stephen Markey and wife Mary, John A. Markey, Ann Barlow and husband Raymond, Winifred Winslow, and Alice Callaghan and husband Pat, along with her in-laws, Mary Kelly and William Mitchell.

Peter and Jamie and Jim and Marion wish to extend a heartfelt and special thank you to Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Bill and Aunt Mary and Uncle Mike for the incredible love and support they showed Mom following Dad's passing.

Ellen will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, her quiet strength, and the love she so freely gave to all who knew her. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to call her wife, mother, Nana, sister, aunt, and friend.

Her funeral will be held on Friday December 19th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 121 Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford at 9 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday December 18th from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hasbro Children's Hospital, 593 Eddy St., Providence, RI 02903 in memory of Dominic Longo.
