Evelyn A. (Giza) Ponte, 88 of New Bedford died July 24, 2011 at Our Lady's Haven.
She was the wife of the late Anthony P. Ponte, Jr.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late John J. and May (Draper) Giza, she lived in New Bedford for all of her life.
She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Mrs. Ponte was a graduate of St. Luke's School of Nursing in 1951 as was later employed as a registered nurse in the operating room at St. Luke's Hospital for many years until her retirement in 1985.
She served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II from April 1945 to October 1946.
Mrs. Ponte was a member of the Women's League at St. Francis of Assisi Church. She enjoyed trips to Foxwoods with her late husband Tony. Mrs. Ponte adored her cat Goldie her faithful companion for many years. She was a devoted Boston RedSox fan who enjoyed going to Fenway Park with her late father. Her favorite player of all time was Ted Williams.
Survivors include a son, Jeffrey P. Ponte of Rochester; a daughter, Lori Otano and her husband Andres and granddaughter, Katie May Otano, all of Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was the sister of the late Shirley Conly.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 27th at 10 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours Tuesday, July 26th from 5-7 PM.
