George Fontes, 96, of New Bedford died Friday February 20, 2015 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Lucille M. (Morin) Fontes.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph R. and Alzira (Avila) Fontes, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Acushnet.

Mr. Fontes was formerly employed as a certified public accountant.

He was a former golfer at Whaling City Golf Course.

He was a graduate of Bryant College.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

Survivors include his wife; and two nephews, Carlton Ryder and George Ryder.


He was the brother of the late Esther Ryder.
