Gilbert Costa, 89, of Dartmouth passed away at home on Saturday June 13, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Lillian I. (L’Heureux) Costa; they had been married for 66 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Albert and Sarah (Costa) DeCosta, he lived in Dartmouth for most of his life.
Gil was the former owner of G&G Harley Davidson. He loved riding his own Harley until the age of 80. He was a “jack of all trades” who could fix just about anything and was an absolute computer wizard. He loved Blue Grass music and played on a regular basis with “The Grey-Haired Boys,” playing the banjo and many other instruments.
He was a proud United States Army veteran, having served in Germany with the Army Division 82nd Airborne.
He is survived by his wife Lillian; his children, Gilly Costa and his wife Joanne Saunders Costa, Joanne Costa Medeiros and her husband Fernando Medeiros; and Tammy Costa; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his lifelong “brother” Richie Mello. Gil loved his family and cherished the time that he spent with all of them. He was also a lifelong friend to many whom he always kept in touch with over the years.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Armand, Albert “PeeWee”, Donald, Michael “Mickey", and Gerry.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday June 18th at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial with military honors will follow in Rural Cemetery. His family will receive visitors on Thursday from 10-11 AM prior to the service.
