IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hadley Ann
Peternel
February 24, 2023 – August 8, 2024
Hadley Ann Peternel, beloved daughter of Robert (BJ) Peternel and Bianca Vieira of New Bedford, passed away peacefully in her parents' arms on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at Boston Children's Hospital. Born prematurely on February 24, 2023, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Hadley faced a congenital heart defect that, over time, led to new heart and lung diagnoses. Yet, throughout her brief life, she demonstrated extraordinary strength, courage, resilience, and joy.
Despite the challenges she faced, Hadley's life was nothing short of miraculous. Her story is one of triumph, not tragedy. She faced pain, illness, and innumerable medical procedures with a fierce bravery beyond her years, but these hardships never dimmed her light. Hadley's spirit was pure and bright, a beacon of hope and love for everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life, though short, touched many, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who hear her story.
Hadley had a special bond with her identical twin sister Ruby, often watching her play for hours, arm wrestle over toys, and read their favorite book "The Pout-Pout Fish". Her favorite word "mama" reflected her deep bond with her mother, who she adored more than anything. She cherished moments spent with her dada, whether it was sitting back watching sports or strumming his guitar alongside him.
To those who knew her, Hadley was affectionately known by many nicknames: Hadley Butts, Hads, Bugaboo, Lil Croissant, and "D" (by Ruby). She was known for her happy clapping feet and her closed-mouth smile that made her eyes perfectly squint. Hadley spent her days watching the world from her Boppy in the NICU or sitting up in her bed from the CICU, always observing with her big, sparkly blue eyes that seemed to remember every face she encountered.
Hadley's favorite moments were spent walking around Buttonwood Park, visiting the animals at the zoo, and playing with her family at home. She overcame odds that many believed impossible, always on her own timeline, and always with a spirit full of fight and heart.
Her family and friends will forever remember her blonde curls, long eyelashes, loud yawns, chubby cheeks, and crossed legs. Whenever you see a daisy or a heart, think of Hadley and the joy she brought to the world. She was, and always will be, ALL HEART. ALL FIGHT.
Hadley is survived by her adoring parents, her twin sister Ruby, and a large family who loves her endlessly. She is now reunited in heaven with her grandfather Bob and great-grandparents Ann, Ray, Gil, and Joan.
