Ira (Iris) Sagiv Alkalay 1963-2026

Ira Alkalay, 62, of Westport, MA, formerly of Newton, MA and New Bedford, MA died on February 21, 2026.

Ira was born in Afula, Israel in 1963 to Cecilia (Merenzon) and Israel Alkalay. He attended New Bedford public schools before attending Brandeis University and Suffolk Law School. He spent his career as an attorney for the Committee for Public Council Services, and in recent years, expanded his practice to focus on immigration law.

Ira is survived by his children, Ari Appel of Los Angeles, CA and Isaac Appel of Brooklyn, NY, his wife, Mindy Scharlin of Westport, MA, his mother, Cecilia Alkalay of New Bedford, MA, his sister, Yael (Scott, Yona) Kruger of Mattapoisett, MA, and stepdaughters Hannah Scharlin-Pettee of Oakland, CA and Sophie Scharlin-Pettee of London, England.

Services will be held at Tifereth Israel Congregation, 1465 Brownell Ave., New Bedford Sunday March 1st at 2 PM. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery in New Bedford. Please contact family members for Shiva dates and times.
