Jack Tavares

Jack Tavares, 87, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at St. Luke's Hospital with his daughter by his side.

Born in New Bedford, son of the late Phil Barboza and Eugenia Tavares, he lived in New Bedford, Falmouth, and Boston for most of his life.

He was the proprietor of Tavares Oil for many years until his retirement.

Jack enjoyed participating in sports and sponsored several local teams including a men's basketball league and a little league baseball team. He also loved to spend time with his family and was a longtime volunteer for Coastline Elderly's Foster Grandparent Program.

He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie A. Tavares; his grandson, Jayden Tavares; his brother, Michael Baptista; his former spouse, Anne (Silva) Tavares; his Godchild and niece, Michelle Andrade; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his son, David Tavares; and his siblings, Robert "Tarty" Baptista, Barbara Silva, and Estelle "Stella" Pires.

His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at 11:45am in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:45-11:45am, prior to the service.
