Jo-Ann Monteiro, 65, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with ALS. She fought the disease with faith and dignity.
Born in Acushnet, daughter of the late Joseph and Angelina (Gomes) Monteiro, she lived in many places across the world before settling in Dartmouth.
Jo-Ann was a USAF Technical Sergeant retiring in 1996. She worked mainly as an administrative professional for the Air Force Security Police. Jo-Ann served her country proudly during Desert Shield/ Desert Storm at military bases all across the globe. After retirement she worked at St. Luke's hospital as a safety sitter, and was a caregiver as her parents aged.
Jo-Ann enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family, gardening, reading, puzzles and her beloved cats. While she was still able, she enjoyed long walks outside. She was a 1976 graduate of Dartmouth High School.
She is survived by three brothers, Steven Monteiro and his wife Maura of Worthington, MA, Jerome Monteiro and his companion Deanna of Texas, and John Monteiro and his companion Christine Sylvia of New Bedford; five sisters, Donna Allen and her husband Anthony of Boston, Kaye Washington and her husband Thaddeus of NC, Angela Millwood and her husband Calvin of Philadelphia, PA, Josephine Monteiro and her companion Ron of Dartmouth and Christine LeBlanc and her husband Gerard of New Bedford; two aunts; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is predeceased by her sister Beatrice Young.
Her Funeral will be held on Monday, June 17th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 10 AM. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, June 16th from 2-5 PM. Jo-Ann's family wants to thank the Providence VA ALS clinic, Homebase primary care, and Allpro home care (Rachelle).
