Joao Furtado, 90, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 29, 2024. He was the husband of Maria (Linhares) Furtado.

Born in the Azores, son of the late Manuel and Beatriz (Ferreira) Furtado, he has lived in New Bedford since the 1960s.

Joao enjoyed gardening, going on walks, and spending time with his great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Maria; his grandchildren, Ryan and Alex Furtado; his great-grandchildren, Zander, Beau, and Meadow; his sister, Lidia Deus; his sister-in-law, Maria "MiMi" Silva and her husband Karl; his Godchildren, Analia and Maria; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, John Furtado, Jr; and his 9 siblings.

His Funeral will be held Saturday, July 6, 2024 at 8:30 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford followed by his Funeral Mass at 9:30 AM at St. Mary's Church, Dartmouth.  Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be Friday, July 5, 2024 from 4-6 PM.  For directions and guestbook, visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
