Joao Celestino "Koy" Centeio, 55, of New Bedford died January 4, 2025 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Piquinho, Fogo, Cape Verde on August 8, 1969, son of Casiniro and Maria De Lourdes (Tavares) Centeio. In 1990, he immigrated to Boston where he built a life centered around hard work and generosity.  Joao worked with cars and eventually owned his own auto glass company.  Once he established himself, he dedicated much of his time to helping friends and family immigrate and build better lives.  Inspired by the strong foundation and big heart installed in him by his father, Joao spent his life serving others with love and kindness.

A devoted father, grandfather and friend, Joao was known for his ability to bring laughter and joy to those around him.  He loved traveling to Cape Verde, playing soccer, fixing cars and spending quality time with his loved ones.

Survivors include his beloved wife Jaquelina Ferreira Centeio; his parents Maria De Lourdes Tavares Centeio and Casimiro Centeio; his five children, Chris Centeio, Danika Carvalho, Devin Centeio, Jessica Semedo Silva and Geney Semedo Silva; three cherished grandchildren, Ivar Silva Tavares, Royal Ribeiro and Sage Carvalho; six siblings, Ana Tavares Centeio, Irlanda Cabral, Carina Helga Tavares Centeio, Angilo Tavares Centeio, Helio Tavares Centeio and Irlando Tavares Centeio.

Joao's legacy of love, laughter and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

His life was a testament to love and service and his memory will forever live on.

His Funeral will be held on Saturday, January 11th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday, January 10th from 4-8 PM.
