It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Joaquim "Shema" Gomes. He died on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Joaquim was 68 years old.
He was born in Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, the son of Antonia M. Gomes and the late Pedro L. Gomes, and immigrated to Providence, Rhode Island in the 1970's, where he lived before settling in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
He will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Antonia M. Gomes; his wife, Ines G. Centeio; his children, Stefan and J'ahndra Gomes; his brothers, Antonio, Amilcar, Jose, Emanuel, and Brian Gomes; his sisters, Maria DaLuz, Filomina Sequeira, and Danielle Gomes; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Pedro L. Gomes and his son, Christian A. Gomes.
Joaquim was a master mechanic and was employed by Pearson-Miller Volkswagon, Scott Volkswagon, and most recently Ferreira's Auto in New Bedford.
He was a talented Cape Verdean musician, best known as "Shema." He performed with many musicians in and around the New Bedford area.
He was an avid soccer player and enjoyed watching the games, especially Sporting. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

His Funeral Service will be Monday, July 22, 2024 at 10:30 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday, July 21st from 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
