John Barros, Jr., 85, of North Dartmouth, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Wendy Barros.
Born in Manhattan, New York, he was the son of the late John and Alice (Soit) DeBarros. John spent most of his life in New Bedford and North Dartmouth, where he laid his foundation.
In his early years, John was a boxer, known as "a real crowd pleaser."
John worked for the International Longshoremen's Association and spent much of his life as a Mason Tender.
John was a proud, hardworking man of strong faith and integrity. When he set his mind to something, he saw it through. Truly a self-made man, he was driven by determination, ambition, and an unwavering work ethic. He built an impressive real estate legacy, becoming a successful real estate entrepreneur, a dedicated landlord for over 50 years, and a mentor to many along the way. He believed in hard work, perseverance, and making things happen.
He always said, "A Fast Nickel Beats a Slow Dime!"
John was a very charismatic man with an infectious smile that could light up any room! He loved entertaining everyone and was a fantastic dancer, especially when doing the "Jitterbug," moving as if he were dancing on air! John had such a genuine character and truly left a lasting impression wherever he went.
He was also an avid collector of fine automobiles, particularly Mercedes-Benz.
Above all, John will be remembered for the joy he brought, the wisdom he shared with those around him, and the countless memories he created with the people he loved.
“Legends Never Die...”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy; his children, Lorna Faria and her partner, Lester Grant; Tyrone Barros and his wife, Kimberly; and Devante Barros; his sister, Jeannette Barboza; his grandchildren, LeAndra and her husband, Charley Williams, Kayleen, Justice, Lexie, Nathan, and Neriyah; his great-grandchildren, Elijah, Mariah, and Nylah; and many nieces and nephews, including his niece, Simone Beverly, with whom they shared a very special bond together.
The family would also like to acknowledge his sister-in-law, Donna Beverly, whom John adored, especially for her home cooking. She lovingly cared for him during his time of need.
He is predeceased by his sisters, Charlotte Williams, Anna Mae Gonzales, and Betty Barros.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026 at 10 am from Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church and entombment in Rural Cemetery. His visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 PM.
