John D. Ferreira, 88, of New Bedford died Monday January 21, 2013 at home surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was the husband of Maria LaSalette (Santos) Ferreira; they were married for 58 years.

Born in Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, the son of the late Aleixo and Ingracia (Almeida) Ferreira, he moved to New Bedford in 1976.

Mr. Ferreira was formerly employed as a chief steward for an international shipping company, and was later employed by Frionor when he moved to New Bedford.

Survivors include his wife; his five children, Ana M. Ferreira and her husband John Chludzinski of Bethesda, MD, Ligia M. Ferreira of Pawtucket, RI, and Solange S. Ferreira, Daniel S. Ferreira, and Celso S. Ferreira, all of New Bedford; and two grandchildren, Kamisha and Kayla Ferreira.

Visiting hours will be on Friday from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John D.
