John Furtado, Jr., 61, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully after a long illness.

Born in New Bedford, son of Joao and Maria (Linhares) Furtado, he was raised in Fairhaven before moving to New Bedford.

John was a dedicated family man and loved being with his grandchildren. John enjoyed listening to music. Even through his years of illness he was always concerned with helping and taking care of others. He served proudly in the United States Marine Corps.

John worked at various stores before being diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis in 2009 forcing him into retirement.

Survivors include his parents; his children, Ryan Furtado of New Bedford, and Alex Furtado and his wife Nancy of Tiverton; his grandchildren, Zander, Beau, and Meadow; his Aunt Maria "Mimi" Silva and her husband Karl who helped care for him in his illness; and many more aunts; uncles; cousins; nieces; and nephews.

John's Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 17th at 11 AM in St. Mary's Church, 795 Dartmouth Street, South Dartmouth.
