John Kent, 79, of New Bedford, formerly of Jackson Heights, New York, passed away Thursday October 2, 2025 at St. Luke's Hospital.

Born in New York, New York, the son of the late Milton and Katherine (Chongarlides) Kent, he lived in New York all of his life before retiring to New Bedford, his mother's hometown, in 2015 following the death of his uncle Lazarus W. "Larry" Chongarlides.

John was formerly employed as a maintainer for buses and trains for the New York City Transit Authority for 40 years until his retirement.

During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by several cousins; and several close friends and caregivers in the New Bedford area, including John Saunders, Tricia Saunders, and Paul DeBortoli.

He was predeceased by his brother Kosta Kent.

A private funeral service was held on Tuesday morning at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial followed in Pine Grove Cemetery.
