John D. Tavares, 87, of Dartmouth passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 61 years Edith (Clarimundo) Tavares by his side on January 28, 2025.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, he was the son of the late Teofilio and Agnes (Duarte) Tavares. After coming to the United States at age 16, he spent his life in the area living in New Bedford for many years before moving to Dartmouth.
John and Edith were proud owners of the Willow Tree Restaurant for 35 years before retiring. He was beloved by all who knew him, family, friends, and customers. He was always humorous and telling jokes.
He was a member of the Bisca Tournament Club.
John loved music and playing his violin. He enjoyed playing cards, watching westerns, and most of all recounting memories with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Edith; his sister-in-law, Helena Fernandes and husband John of New Bedford; his brother-in-law, Jaime Clarimundo and wife Elena of New Bedford; his cousin, Fernanda Lobo and husband Joe of New Bedford; his Godchildren; and a loving extended family.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM.
