Obituary

Joseph Hugh Carney, 89, of New Bedford, passed away Friday August 16, 2024. He was the husband of beloved wife Anne (Ratcliffe) Carney. They had been married for fifty-seven years. Joe was the youngest of the five children of Edward Carney and Cecelia (Cullen) Carney, who were born in County Mayo, Ireland and Brooklyn, New York respectively.

A lifelong resident of New Bedford, Joe was a proud graduate of Holy Family High School as well as Boston University, where he studied film, radio and television. As a student at BU, Joe once interviewed baseball great Ted Williams for a radio program. He then worked for many years as a director / producer in the Boston, Providence and Cape Cod markets. Programs he directed included the nightly local news, and children's favorite The Bozo Show. Other early assignments were the New England staple candlepin bowling and Boston Red Sox broadcasts with hall of fame announcer Curt Gowdy. He produced and directed memorable local commercials and also an award-winning passion project documentary about the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation.

He had a great love of newspapers and reading and kept an outstanding library that included many volumes on the local art and history of the whaling days of New Bedford and Nantucket. Classical music (especially Beethoven), opera, and jazz were solid favorites. The majestic trees and the grand parks and beaches of the New Bedford area were also special to him. Trips to the historic New Bedford post office nurtured a lifelong interest in stamp collecting. Some said he made the perfect gin and tonic.

Joe is survived by wife "Annie" and daughter Katherine (Carney) Macsuga and her husband Todd of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, son Joseph Edward Carney and partner Fay Lyn of Brooklyn, New York, granddaughters Meghan and Devin and several nieces and nephews.
