Joseph "Joe Whopper" Ferreira, 83, of New Bedford died Saturday July 20, 2013. He was the husband of the late Patricia A. (Hicks) Ferreira.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Machado) Ferreira, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.

In his younger days, he played professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and professional soccer for Portuguese Sports and numerous other teams.

Survivors include a son, Joseph W. Ferreira; a daughter, Bridget A. McCarthy and her husband Robert; and a granddaughter, Meaghan A. McCarthy.


Private funeral arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
