Joseph J. Monteiro, 87, of Dartmouth died February 21, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of Arcangela J. "Arkie" (Ramos) Monteiro.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late John A. and Mary T. (Ramos) Monteiro, he lived in Dartmouth most of his life.
Mr. Monteiro was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He was formerly employed as a corrections officer with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections at MCI-Cedar Junction/Walpole, as a police officer with the Dartmouth Police Department and in retirement he was a bus driver for the Dartmouth School District. Mr. Monteiro served as commissioner of the Dartmouth Housing Authority and manager of the United Social Club.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, Godfather, uncle and friend. He was fun loving and enjoyed life. Mr. Monteiro was an avid Boston Celtics and New England Patriots fan. He enjoyed boating.
Survivors include his wife; 2 daughters, Phyllis Trigueiro and her husband Brian of New Bedford and Paula Lopes of Providence; a granddaughter, Jennifer Monteiro; a great-grandson, Tyler Monteiro; a great-granddaughter, Sydney Lopes; a great-great-grandson, Tyson Monteiro; 5 step grandchildren, 14 step great-grandchildren; a step great-great-grandchild; 2 Godchildren, Robert Monteiro and Nancy Lopes; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late John Monteiro and JoAnn Monteiro and the brother of the late Antone Monteiro, Manuel Monteiro, Michael Monteiro, Peter Monteiro, Antonia Ramos, Emily Ramos and Mary Monteiro.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Wednesday, February 26th at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours Tuesday, February 25th from 4-8 PM.
