Larry Pina, age 80, of New Bedford, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Dana M. (Duarte) Pina.
Born in New Bedford, Larry was the son of the late Julia and Henry "Harry" Pina and was a lifelong resident of the city he loved.
A proud veteran, Larry served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His military service shaped his strong sense of discipline, integrity, and devotion to others - values he carried with him throughout his life, his work, and his commitment to family and community.
Larry was formerly employed as a mail delivery person for the New Bedford Public School Department, retiring after many years of dedicated service. He also worked as a property clerk for the Bristol County Sheriff's Department, served as a residential advisor for the Center for Health and Human Services, and provided foster care services for adults with disabilities.
Known for his great sense of humor, loyalty, and commitment to truth, Larry was a dedicated and loving father who took great pride in his family. He deeply cherished his grandchildren and valued time spent with those he loved.
Deeply involved in his community, Larry was active in local organizations and youth sports. He was a member of the United Social Club, coached basketball for Our Lady of the Assumption Church and the Y.A. Club, and served as a referee for the C.Y.O.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Dana M. (Duarte) Pina; his sons, Tyrone Pina and his wife Kim, Chad Pina, and Larry Pina, Jr.; and his former wife, Viola Pina-Pires, the devoted mother of his sons Tyrone and Chad. He is also survived by his sons-in-love, Tyson Rose, Bobbie Duarte, Devin Duarte, and Tyler Duarte; his siblings, Linda Pina and her husband Leroy Walcott, Doreen Pina-Pena, Gail Pina-Crosby, and Colleen Pina-Garron and her husband Christopher; and many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Cynthia Lobo, Loretta "Lolly" Silva, and Henry Pina.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 4, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford. Cremation will follow, and a burial service with military honors will be held at Rural Cemetery at a later date.
