Lorraine A. Cabral (Varsel), a strong, resilient, and fiery woman whose life was filled with passion, storytelling, and love, passed away peacefully at home on January 8, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on September 23, 1949, to Edward and Dorothy Varsel, Lorraine lived a life that inspired and touched the hearts of all who knew her.
She is survived by her three children, April Jones, Crystal DeMoranville, and Ronald "Buzzy" DeMoranville and his spouse Nicole DeMoranville; her three beloved grandchildren, Cassaundra Jones, Jon Sylvia, and Luc DeMoranville; and her four great-grandchildren, Naijion Abreu, Ariav Furtado, Samuel Furtado, and Jonelli Reign Sylvia. Lorraine cherished her family deeply and found immense joy in spending time with them, weaving her love into every shared moment.
For 20 years, Lorraine dedicated herself to her work at BAMSI as an Assistant Program Director, where she championed the needs of developmentally disabled adults. Her commitment to her role reflected her caring nature and desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
A proud Wiccan, Lorraine found spiritual fulfillment in her faith, embracing its values and teachings. She was an avid reader of Stephen King novels and a devoted fan of horror movies, delighting in the thrill and creativity of the genre. Her love for storytelling extended beyond the books and movies she enjoyed-Lorraine herself was a captivating storyteller, sharing her life's adventures and experiences with humor, wisdom, and flair.
Lorraine's life was a testament to her strength and determination. She transformed her journey, rising from "zero to hero" and leaving a legacy of resilience and courage. Her fiery spirit and boundless passion for life will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, February 15, 2025 from 2-5 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to organizations supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, or to the ACLU in support of causes close to her heart.
Lorraine's incredible life stories and indomitable spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, a reminder of a life well-lived and a love that will never fade.
