Manuel "Gus" Viera, 91, of New Bedford died September 5, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital at St. Luke's Hospital
He was the husband of the late Irene (Ferreira) Viera.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Augusto and Maria (Soares) Viera, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, New Bedford.
Mr. Viera was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman for over 55 years and began his career at the age of 15 with his father. He was a member of the New Bedford Fisherman's Union.
He was an avid Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins fan.
Survivors include 2 sisters, Amelia DeMello and Hilda Theodore, and her husband Joseph, all of South Dartmouth; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Rose Gonsalves, Mary Costa, Cecelia DeGrand and Joseph Viera.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Saturday, September 9th at 8 AM followed by his Funeral Mass at 9 AM in St. Mary's Church, New Bedford.
Interment St. John's Cemetery.
Visiting hours Friday, September 8th from 5-8 PM.
