Margaret E. Gomes

Margaret E. (Monteiro) Gomes, 99, of New Bedford passed away Wednesday February 4, 2026 at Vantage of New Bedford after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late George W. Gomes. Born in Hyannis, the daughter of the late Mary (Fernandes) DeBurgo and Frank Monteiro, she lived in Providence, RI for many years, before moving to New Bedford in 1992.

Margaret was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She was a former member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Fort Phoenix Post Veterans of Foreign Wars in Fairhaven and an associate member of the Merchant Mariners Club in New Bedford.

She is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Monteiro and Laura Lewis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Elizabeth Ann "Nanette" Gomes, and sister of the late Frank Monteiro, Jr., Barbara Lopes, Minnie Gomes, and Marie Crowley.

A private burial service was held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Arrangements were by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
