Maria G. Camilo

Maria G. (Gibau) Camilo, 96, of Dartmouth passed away on Tuesday April 21, 2026. She was the wife of the late Eduardo A. Camilo and Manuel J. Santiago.

Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the daughter of the late John and Maria (Silva) Gibau, she moved to New Bedford at the age of 17 and later resided in Dartmouth for many years.

Maria was formerly employed by Capeway Seafood for many years until her retirement.

Maria and Eduardo enjoyed traveling and time spent on Brava. She also enjoyed spending time with family, especially with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Catherine Chmiel and her husband Stephen, and John Santiago; four grandchildren, Amy Kingman and her husband Patrick, Stephen J. Chmiel and his wife Angela, Jessica M. Santiago, and Jonathan J. Santiago and his wife Mercedes; five great-grandchildren, Samuel Kingman, Jacob Kingman, Jackson Santiago, Stephen D. Chmiel, and John O. Chmiel; her siblings, Joaquim “Boboy” Fortes and Mariana Vieira; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her stepson, Antonio Santiago.

Her graveside service will be held on Monday April 27th at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Cemetery, 559 Mt Pleasant St., New Bedford. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday April 26th from 2-4 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
