Maria S. (Soares) Gomes, 95, of New Bedford died Monday June 6, 2016 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Francisco Alves Gomes.

Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the daughter of the late Joao and Matilda (Silva) Soares, she had resided in New Bedford since 1967.

Mrs. Gomes was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, where she was a member of the Prayer Group.

She loved gardening and cooking.

She is survived by six children, Suzette G. Lobo and her husband John, Domingos S. Gomes and his wife Debbie, and Matilda S. Gomes, all of New Bedford, Manuel S. Gomes and his wife Naomi, and John S. Gomes, all of Boston, and Maria S. Gomes of Killeen, TX; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one great-great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews.

She was the mother of the late Jose S. Gomes, and sister of the late Manuel Soares, Antonio Soares, and Domingos Mendes.

Her Funeral will be held on Saturday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
