Mario Carreiro

Mario Carreiro, 64, of Fairhaven passed away on July 27, 2026, following a tragic car accident. He was the husband of Anne (Dupont) Carreiro.

Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Mariano and Maria R. (Vieira) Carreiro. He grew up in New Bedford and lived in Fairhaven for several decades. He and his wife met at Holy Family High School and had been together ever since. Together they had three children and two grandchildren.

As a first-generation Portuguese-American, Mario took great pride in his heritage; his mother had emigrated from the island of São Miguel in the Azores. He grew up in the South End of New Bedford, where, while still in high school, he became one of the first skate guards at Hot Wheels. Mario held management positions with McDonald's, CVS, and Home Depot, attending Hamburger University during his time at McDonald's. Most recently, he was part of the MET team at Home Depot. He devoted much of his life to soccer, refereeing for the Whaling City Official Soccer Association for decades. He also spent many summer weekends camping with family and friends; he and his wife were members of the Sam's Cape Codders camping club, where he served as Vice President.

Thanks to the skills his father taught him, Mario became a jack-of-all-trades handyman, spending much of his life working on his beloved house in Fairhaven. He was not only a devoted father and grandfather, but also a devoted neighbor and friend, always ready to help anyone in need, without judgment. And if he couldn't fix something, at least you got a good story and a laugh out of it.

When he wasn't working, camping, or helping someone out, he was spending time with his grandchildren. He was so proud of his granddaughter's soccer skills, and, like his own father before him, he taught his grandson everything he knew about woodworking and fixing things.

He is survived by his wife, Anne; his children, Adam and Kate Carreiro, Eric Carreiro, and Amanda Carreiro and her partner, Dexter Warren; his brother, Victor Carreiro; and his two grandchildren, Bridget Carreiro and Gabriel Warren. He is also survived by several nieces and family friends, whom he considered and cared for as his own children.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, August 10th, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. On Tuesday August 11th at 10 a.m. his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 230 Bonney St., New Bedford. Everyone is invited to meet directly at church.
