Mary Louise Tavares, 74, of New Bedford died January 10, 2024 after a long illness at home surrounded by her family.
She was the life-partner of Henry Sarmento, with whom she shared 44 years of joy.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late David S. and Cecilia B. (Freitas) Tavares, as well as sister of the late Cecilia E. "Sue" Riley, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
She was formerly employed as a school psychologist with the New Bedford School Department for over 30 years until her retirement.
Mary Lou enjoyed the company of her dog LouLou Maire, reading, travel and trips to the casino.
Survivors include her niece, Danielle Garcia and her husband William of Pawtucket, RI; her life-partner Henry and Henry's daughter Brandi Sarmento of Fairhaven.
Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 19th at 11 AM in St. Mary's Church, 795 Dartmouth St. Dartmouth. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
