Michael Gallagher, Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Passes Away at 73
Michael Steven Gallagher, 73, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, passed away on October 16th, 2024, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Rosemary Gallagher; his son and daughter-in-law, Shawn Gallagher and Cristina Corrieri; his daughter and son-in-law, Brooke Gallagher and Steven Thorne; his cherished grandson, Louis Thorne; and two sisters, Sheila Gallagher and JoAnn Gisborne. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard F. Gallagher and Doris (Masson) Gallagher, and his brother, Bernard F. Gallagher, Jr. Michael will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Born and raised in New Bedford, MA, Michael recently split his time between his hometown and Jensen Beach, FL. He frequently traveled to England to visit his daughter and grandson, embracing many new experiences abroad. Michael was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School, Class of 1970. A proud machinist, Michael spent his career working at Brodeur Machine Company, Inc., retiring at the age of 66. In his retirement, he could most often be found enjoying the sun and sand at Nettles Island or West Island, two of his favorite spots.
Michael had a lifelong passion for sailing, beginning his journey at the age of 21. As a member of The Catboat Association, he spent countless hours on the water, honing his craft and sharing his love with others. He was also an active and dedicated member of his children's school communities, volunteering his time through the PTO at Betsy B. Winslow School and New Bedford High School. Whether helping at Girl Scout campouts, assisting with marching band and colorguard competitions, or contributing to school fundraisers, Michael was always there, offering his time and support.
In recent years, Michael enjoyed exploring the local pubs and landscapes of England while bonding with his grandson, Louis. He cherished building blocks and sandcastles with Louis and spent much time with him in the water - whether swimming, boating or splashing around the pool.
Throughout his life, Michael found joy in cooking, grilling at the beach, listening to The Beatles, and watching classic movies. A true jack-of-all-trades, he had a remarkable ability to fix anything that broke and was known for his inventive solutions. His friends and family often relied on him for help, knowing that he would show up without expecting anything in return.
Michael will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and great sense of humor. He lived his life with a spirit of adventure, always trying new things and offering a helping hand. His warmth, good nature, and willingness to support others left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Fittingly, a memorial tribute and celebration of his life will be held on All Saints Day, November 1st, 2024, starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Wamsutta Club, located at 427 County St, New Bedford, MA 02740. Friends and family are welcomed to attend and encouraged to share a memory at the service.
