Millicent L. (Gibbs) Garr, 93, of New Bedford died August 9, 2026 at home surrounded by her family.
She was the wife of the late Maurice "Mickey" Garr.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late John T. and Maria Louise (Coblins) Gibbs, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
She was formerly employed as a teacher at the United Front Daycare and later at North Star Learning Center until her retirement.
Mrs. Garr was an active member of the International Church of the Nazarene where she served as a Sunday School teacher for over 30 years.
Mrs. Garr enjoyed being a foster grandparent. She attended adult daycare at Rosemary S. Tierney Community Center.
She was a member of the J.W. Hood Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her 3 daughters, Andrea Barnes of New Bedford, Dolores Garr of Lithonia, GA and Michele Garr and her companion Kenneth Douglas of New Bedford; 3 grandchildren, Haywood Barnes, III, Maurice Barnes and Alexis Jade Garr; 8 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the grandmother of the late Ethan Smart Barnes and the sister of the late Vera (Watkins) Hunt, Eunice (Watkins) Duarte-Carter, Sonny Gibbs, Myrtle Gibbs, Roberta Gibbs, Ellsworth Gibbs, Sr., David P. Gibbs, Loretta (Gibbs) Sims and Delores (Gibbs) Graham.
Her visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 13th from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Her Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 14th at 9:30 AM in the International Church of the Nazarene, 286 Pleasant St. St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
