Obituary

The Reverend G. Kenneth Garrett, 94, of Fairhaven and Mattapoisett, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 14, 2024.

He was born in Somerville, MA on September 2, 1929 to Myrtle B. (Whittemore) Garrett and George Everett Garrett.

Rev. Mr. Garrett graduated from Tufts University in 1953 and Berkeley Divinity School in New Haven, CT in 1957.   He was ordained to the priesthood on December 20, 1957 at St. Paul's Cathedral in Boston.  He then served as the Vicar of St. James Episcopal Church in Groveland MA and All Saints Episcopal Church in Georgetown MA.

He and his wife, Mary Louise Chubbuck, were married on July 26, 1958.  They moved to New Bedford in October 1959 where Rev. Mr. Garrett was called to serve as Associate Rector of Grace Episcopal Church.  He faithfully served his congregation for 33 years until his retirement in 1992 as the 19th Rector of Grace Church.  He ministered to his congregation throughout the rebuilding of the Church following the devastating fire in 1987.

Rev. Mr. Garrett had an unwavering commitment to family, faith, and service to others. He cherished his family and was a source of strength, guidance, and endless love for them. His love for and devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren serves as an inspiration to all who knew him. He took his family to Nova Scotia annually to spend time with his cousins and their families.

Rev. Mr. Garrett served on the Boards of the Salvation Army and Child and Family Services and was active in many other community organizations. After retirement, he continued to serve in the ministry by officiating at ceremonies at the Seamen's Bethel and other churches. He touched countless lives with his words of wisdom, kindness, and compassion and exemplified the true essence of selflessness and devotion.

He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Mary Louise Garrett; his children Emily Collins and her partner Mark Gagnon of New Bedford, Sarah and her husband David Wordell of Fairhaven, David and his wife Annette Roccapalumba-Garrett of Barrington IL, and Andrew and his wife Kathleen Hogan-Garrett of Powder Springs GA; his grandchildren Peter and John Collins, Matthew, Katherine and Nathaniel Wordell, Sean Hurley and Victoria Garrett and her husband Kyle Alvarez Munoz, William Hogan and Jacob and Thomas Garrett.  He is also survived by his extended family in the United States and Nova Scotia, Canada.  He was predeceased by his son-in-law James T. Collins.

His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday April 20th at 9 AM in Grace Episcopal Church.  Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven.
