IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard J.
Shea
August 14, 1956 – June 29, 2025
Richard J. Shea, 68, of New Bedford, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday June 29, 2025.
Born to the late Robert and Constance (Jason) Shea, Rick dedicated his life to service, courage, and community. For 39 years, he served with honor and dedication in the New Bedford Fire Department, rising through the ranks to become Captain. His leadership, calm under pressure, and unwavering commitment to protecting others earned him the respect of his "brothers" beside him and deep gratitude of the community he served.
Beyond his remarkable career, Rick was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 35 years, Ellen Lowney Shea; his children Patrick (Lauren), and Molly; his siblings Michael (Cynthia) Shea, and Patricia (Dennis) Thibeault. He was predeceased by his sister Maureen Williams and "in-laws" Marybeth Boy, Kathleen Kalife, and Paul Lowney. Rick will also be remembered by Margaret (Jeffry) Shaefer, Patricia (Russell) L'Abbe, Maureen (Louis) Laferriere, Everett Boy, Jimmy Kalife (Laura), and Maureen Lowney. He will be terribly missed by his "best bud" Paul Charbonneau. Even his cherished pets, Maggie and Beau, will feel the loss of his loving presence. Rick also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews who will dearly miss their "Uncle Ricky".
He will be warmly remembered by all his friends at the Reservation Golf Club and The Dipper - for the good times, great stories, and the kind of company you never forget.
Rick's warmth extended far beyond his family. Known for his big heart, quick wit, and generous spirit, he was a friend to many. Whether coaching sports, helping out neighbors, or simply having a Bud at the Dip, Rick lived a life of quiet heroism and genuine kindness.
Though we mourn his loss, we celebrate the legacy of strength, integrity, and love he leaves behind. His spirit will live on in every life he touched.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday July 8th at 11 AM at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 121 Mount Pleasant St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday July 7th from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
